We recently completed this fun science experiment that’s perfect for summer time! Who doesn’t like playing with water in the heat?

Don’t Sink The Boat
As we’ve moved into this month’s theme, The Alphabet House, with Mother Goose Time week 1, we’ve learned all about Homes, Apartments, RVs & Hotels, Houseboats, & Castles! One of our favorite activities of the week was this fun science experiment, Don’t Sink The Boat!
- Aluminum Foil
- Tub of Water
Predict: How many coins can a foil boat hold before it sinks?
1. Shape the foil into a boat that will float on the water and hold coins.
2. Float it in the water and start adding coins one at a time.
3. When the boat sinks, take it out of the water and count the coins.
4. Redesign the boat to try to hold more coins, then test again.
Record: Record the results by drawing pictures of the boats and the coins each held.
We really enjoyed this experiment! We learned about weight distribution (spreading our coins out was better than centering all the weight in the middle), that size matters (we had better luck with smaller boats than very wide, flat ones), and that it’s best to have higher edges to help keep water from coming on board and sinking the boat sooner!
If you try this I’d love to see pictures and hear about your findings!
