My son requested a Sonic the Hedgehog Birthday Party this year for his 7th birthday! Wait, WHAT?! Didn’t we have a Sonic themed cake and party LAST YEAR?! Sigh… at what point will he bore of the little blue guy?! Butttt, because I love my son soooo much, the birthday boy got what the birthday boy wanted. Sonic, Sonic, and MORE Sonic! In case you, too, are caught with a Sonic party request, below is what I came up with! I hope it helps give you some ideas!
First I wanted a pop of fun, bright colors – and for cheap! Sonic colors are primarily blue, red, and yellow (gold), so I bought streamers in those colors and twisted strips from the ceiling and draped to the wall (adhered using plain ol’ scotch tape), and then down the wall for a pretty cool effect.
Next, I had 4 foam floral wreaths on hand from a previous project. Because Sonic is all about collecting gold rings, I got the nifty idea to wrap them in yellow streamers to give them the appearance of rings. The two larger ones I hung on the wall, placing sonic pictures in the center of each ring. The sonic pictures are actually just 2 extra sonic plates that I had left over and taped to the back. (I’m such a dork! I thought I was so clever for doing this! HA!) I then hung the two smaller wreaths from the ceiling (without a picture in the center), and centered my cake between the two.
I found the cutest little Sonic decorations from Birthday Express. Let me tell you – They offer some AMAZING deals! Or maybe I just got lucky? I don’t know. BUT, I saved over $200!!!! Yes, you read that correctly! I purchased the party in a box package (though I customized my order, it still qualified), and I automatically earned a huge savings. On top of that, they had a special for money off of shipping, with an additional % off my total order, AND I found a coupon code that they honored on top of it all! Hello – AMAZING!
Because of my huge savings, it allowed me to purchase some nice things! Well, that and the fact that my son had a much smaller (sleep-over) party this year. Last year we had a huge party at an indoor play area and we paid for EVERY kid in his class to come, in addition to food. Yikes! So yes, this home party took the overhead fees off!
I purchased cute little goodie boxes and filled them with candy, sonic notepads, sonic tattoos, sonic stickers, and all sorts of other fun stuff! Each child also got a sonic t-shirt, sonic squirt bottle, a sonic place-mat (with coloring activities on the back), and a little sonic tin full of little sour candies. Needless to say, they were all super stoked!
One thing that I really enjoy doing for the birthday boy/girl, is making their seat (for cake eating, etc.) special. Whether it be with a little sign, or balloons for their chair, I make sure it is ‘reserved’. Who doesn’t like to feel special?!
This year we did so by tying a bouquet of Sonic balloons on the birthday boy’s chair.
Okay, so I’ll admit: I took the easy way out in the food category. Buuut, it helps that my son ASKED for pizza. Sweet! Pizza it is! Delivery and done! However, I did make some cute little snacks/treats for the kiddos. And because it was a sleep-over, I made sure to have plenty for the late night munchies. (No, we do not let our children eat junk on a regular basis, but I’m all about special treats on special occasions!)
These are seriously the EASIEST things to make. I melted some candy melts (or white chocolate) and dipped the Popsicle stick into it before jabbing them into each marshmallow (be careful not to go all the way through). Next I dipped the marshmallow tops into the melted chocolate and then dipped into a small bowl full of sonic colored sprinkles. That is IT! (I displayed them in a handmade display that I will go over at a later date).
These were a fun way to play along with the chaos emerald theme. (I then designed and printed these fun little Sonic candy containers to display them in. Make sure you use a heavy cardstock! It will NOT work with regular paper!)
One of the things we had planned for our party was to watch a sonic show before bed. Who doesn't love popcorn as part of their movie watching experience?! (I created these adorable sonic popcorn cones to hold it in, and then displayed in a handmade cone holder that I will go over at a later date).
Golden Rings and Chaos Emeralds
For Sonic's Golden Rings we used Funyuns (which the kids surprisingly LOVED). For the Chaos Emeralds we purchased ring pops. I then designed and printed these festive little labels.
And because along with lots of snacks comes lots of crumby, sticky hands… I had plenty of Sonic themed napkins ready for grabs and on display! I simply took an extra goodie box and folded the top section down and inward, then placed 2 stacks of cups into it. I then rolled each napkin and placed them in the cups for display. Easy yet festive.
You may or may not know that I used to run a small, home based cake business. You can read more about how I got into caking here. Though I have ventured on to other things, I still take advantage of the skills I have acquired and bake my own sweets for celebrations (not to mention that my kids LOVE it when I design their birthday cakes, and because I am not paying for someone’s time, it is incredibly cheaper to do it myself).
Some of you may remember the dilemma I posted on facebook about a month ago. My son REALLY wanted a WOW cake… and I REALLY wanted simply cupcakes. HA! I let you folks weigh in your opinions, and well… we see who won that debate. However; there was more of a compromise here than meets the eye! This cake is actually much smaller than it appears, and I will let you in on that little secret… yes. At a later date! (I swear I’m not being mean! My word count is already entirely too long for this post! lol).
I hope you’ve enjoyed Part 1 and have gotten some great ideas! Stay tuned for Part 2! I will be covering GAMES & ACTIVITIES! We all know that a party is not complete without them!
Thanks for joining in on our celebration!
