Thanksgiving Day has now come and gone. The masses (myself included) are now frantically hard at work setting up for Christmas, in hopes of enjoying their grueling efforts for as long as possible (without looking cray-cray. I’d say by March, it’s time to LET IT GO, and take the decor down). HA! No, but seriously.
December 1st is fast approaching and the Advent countdowns will then begin. If you’ve never participated in an Advent tradition, I’m hoping you will consider jumping in on the bandwagon! Our family has had a blast with it! We tend to change it up a little every year, which is part of the fun for us. But if you’re looking for more of a traditional routine, it will be just as special. There really are numerous ways to incorporate Advent Calendars – for families, children, and couples alike.
- Ornament advents (hang a new ornament daily)
- Little surprise goodies
- Activity buckets for children
- Daily acts of service
- Write or receive nice letters to/from family & friends
- Read a new Christmas book daily
- Watch a new Christmas Movie daily
- The possibilities are endless! Have fun & get creative with it!
One of our favorite family traditions has been to read a different Christmas book daily, with ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ being read every Dec. 24th. The very first year we incorporated an advent calendar for the kids, we used mini stockings and stuffed them with little stickers, candies, fun temporary tattoos, crayons, etc. More recently we have incorporated ‘Peter Michael Paul’ – our Elf-on-the-shelf that the boys named. Last year our advent was filled with little notes from PMP leaving clues where to find him that day. The kids got a HUGE kick out of it!
Have I talked you into giving it a try yet? You may be in need of your first calendar! Are you already a seasoned Advent user? Maybe you’d like a fresh new look! Good news! I’ve scrounged through hundreds of Advent Calendars all over the web FOR YOU, and came up with my top 10! (What can I say?! I love my readers!)
